Niswarth in India

The Niswarth program brings together people and ideas from across the globe. Niswarth is Hindi for “not for self.” Guided by the values of humility, empathy and gratitude, the two-week experience connects students and faculty with communities in Ahmedabad, India, to identify local needs and then respond using a collaborative, inclusive design-thinking framework and heart-centered pedagogy. To strengthen our connections, we stay at a retreat center for environmental sustainability, practice daily meditations, meet inspiring speakers and keep comprehensive journals and a public blog. Since 2004, hundreds of Niswarth participants have been inspired by the Gandhian phrase, You Must Be the Change You Wish to See in the World, and have demonstrated long-term engagement with community partners. Connecting knowledge, goodness, action and reflection in a continuous cycle, we gain a sense of purpose and meaningful connection with those around us. This year’s group will meet six times in the spring term and also commit to a project back on campus after our time in India.
