Bison Paddock Non Sibi Project with Winston W. Wyckoff ’78, P’12

Volunteers will help to restore the habitat of the endangered white crowned sparrow at the Bison Paddock in Golden Gate Park. Volunteers will lend a hand with weeding, planting, and mulching. Children ages 8 and older are welcome

A picnic area has been reserved for food, drinks, and socializing after the project. Pack a picnic lunch and join us!

Barring heavy downpours, this project will occur during light rain or sunshine. Please be prepared and dress for various weather conditions. Wear closed-toed shoes, long pants, and layers of clothing. Additionally, gloves, a water bottle, and a snack are always a good idea. Please note that by registering with Andover you are agreeing to the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department waiver of liability. 

Space is limited to 25 adult volunteers.

Non Sibi Project with the Southern California Regional Leadership Team: Willowbrook Community Garden Workday

Join the Southern California Regional Leadership Team at Willowbrook Community Garden to clean up community garden beds and enjoy family-friendly Earth Day events. Volunteers will assist with planting, gardening, pulling weeds, and other maintenance. All ages are welcome to join! 

Saturday, April 19, 2025

Lunch food is not available for purchase at the garden. You are welcome to bring a picnic lunch and stay after the project to eat, socialize, and enjoy the Earth Day celebration! 

Dress for the weather and wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting dirty! Bring water bottles, sunscreen, and a hat. 

Willowbrook Community Garden is operated in connection with the Los Angeles Community Garden Council. Andover will be volunteering as part of a larger event that welcomes members of the public; there will be other volunteers present as well as attendees for the Earth Day event.

Participants will be required to sign a form which will be available at the event indicating agreement with the Los Angeles Community Garden Council Volunteer Guidelines and Waiver of Liability.

The mission of the Los Angeles Community Garden Council is to strengthen communities by building and supporting community gardens where every person in Los Angeles County can grow healthy food in their neighborhood.

Volunteers will participate in an Earth Week project with The Alliance for Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Project activities will be designated closer to the start date, but may include planting, mulching, painting or clean-up. Supervised children 5 and older are welcome to join.

Flushing Meadows Corona Park is an 897-acre public park located in Queens, New York, with a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. Originally a landfill known as the Corona Ash Dump, the site was transformed into a sprawling park by the influential urban planner Robert Moses during the 1930s. Moses oversaw the development of the park as the host for the 1939-1940 World's Fair.

Hailed by Publisher’s Weekly as an “encyclopedic, ingenious, and abundant” writer, Tyehimba Jess is Andover’s 2025 Isham Fellow in Poetry.

Jess is the author of two books of poetry, Leadbelly and Olio. Olio won the 2017 Pulitzer Prize, the Anisfield-Wolf Book Award, and the Society of Midland Authors Award in Poetry, and received an Outstanding Contribution to Publishing Citation from the Black Caucus of the American Library Association.

Leadbelly was a winner of the 2004 National Poetry Series. The Library Journal and Black Issues Book Review both named it one of the “Best Poetry Books of 2005.”

A recipient of fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, Jess is a Distinguished Professor of English at the College of Staten Island.

Free and open to the public.

This event is sponsored by the Alumni/ae Lectureship Fund, the Lana Lobell Fund, and the Sandra Isham Vreeland Fund, dedicated to a PA graduate who was an aspiring poet.

Join us for this special non sibi project and make a difference supporting Gaining Ground! Volunteers may take part in spreading compost and mulch to enrich the soil, transplanting seedlings from the greenhouse into the fields, and maintenance of perennial hedgerows, among other tasks. Children ages 5 and up are welcome to participate.

Gaining Ground is a non-profit farm that grows fresh, organic produce exclusively for donation to those experiencing food insecurity in the Greater Boston area.100% of the food harvested at Gaining Ground is donated to over fifteen local hunger relief organizations. 

This project will take place outside, dress appropriately for the weather and farm work. All volunteers are required to fill out Gaining Ground's waiver form.
