The Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology, the Spanish Department, and the History and Social Science Department at Phillips Academy have teamed up to offer students a unique experience of archaeological exploration and linguistic and cultural immersion in Peru. This trip builds on the highly successful 2006 – 2010 B.A.L.A.M. Project that was well established as one of the most exciting expeditionary learning experiences that Andover offers.
The H.U.A.C.A. Project acronym stands for “Human Understanding through Archaeology and Cultural Awareness.” The indigenous Quechua word huaca refers to a sacred place or object such as a pyramid, or even a small stone. It is pronounced WAH-kah.
This program is open to all students who display an interest in archaeology and the Spanish language, regardless of their prior preparation in either subject. With many years’ experience traveling throughout Latin America, leading international student programs and archaeological projects, and fresh from a scouting trip to Peru, the directors of the H.U.A.C.A. Project are well versed in Latin American cultural diversity and have developed trustworthy contacts with transportation, dining, and lodging providers throughout Peru.
