Exploring Alaska: Climate Histories & Futures
The Exploring Alaska program will take students to a remote homestead in the Inian Islands of Southeast Alaska. Participants will learn what it takes to live sustainably and explore this unique setting through kayaking, hiking, and hands-on field study. Students will return with a better understanding of:
- U.S. and environmental history, specifically related to the Southeastern Coastal Indigenous Peoples and the environmental and cultural impact of settler colonialism in Alaska;
- ecosystems, ethical use of land and natural resources, and sustainable living;
- the ecological and social justice issues exacerbated by climate change; and
- what we can do to effect change in our own communities and beyond.
Students should expect to see glaciers, waterfalls, whales, sea lions, otters, mountains, and temperate rainforests. While accommodations are rustic, previous participants have enjoyed the local fresh food, majestic views, and floating sauna while forging lasting relationships and memories.
