Application Instructions
Please follow all instructions carefully and return completed application to the Summer Session office. No application for admission will be considered until all required materials have been received, including application fee.
Checks should be made payable to Trustees of Phillips Academy and must be drawn on a U.S. bank in U.S. funds. International students, please refer to the separate international Student Information Sheet for payment guidelines.

Step 1: Choose the appropriate program
- Right click on the appropriate link.
- Save the file to your desktop.
- Fill out form 1, 2, or 3 on your computer. Save the file for your records
- Print the file.
- Follow instructions below starting at Step 2.
Step 1: CHOOSE THE APPROPRIATE PROGRAM
Step 2: PERSONAL ESSAY
Without help, please write an essay in which you introduce yourself. Please discuss the following: interests, activities (extra-curricular, community, athletic) and experiences you enjoy or value most. What are your reasons for wishing to attend the Phillips Academy Summer Session?
Accuracy, clarity and honesty are as essential to the application as they are to success in the classroom. Represent yourself as you are so that, if admitted, your teachers will be able to serve you well. For students applying for English as a Second Language Institute, please write your essay in English and by yourself. It is important for assessment purposes that we see your unassisted work.
Step 3: GUIDANCE COUNSELOR FORM
Give Form 4 and an envelope to your guidance counselor or authorized school official to fill out. Request that a copy of your complete transcript, including the most recent grades, be attached. To ensure confidentiality, ask that the form be placed in the envelope, which must be signed across the seal.
Step 4: RECOMMENDATIONS
Give Forms 5 and 6 and envelopes are to two current teachers to fill out. Mathematics applicants are encouraged to give form 6 to a current math teacher. To ensure confidentiality, ask that the forms be placed in the envelopes, which are then sealed and signed across the seals.
Step 5: ESSAY
In addition to the autobiographical essay, please send a copy of a recent English assignment (i.e. paper, essay, worksheet) that has been teacher-corrected and graded.
Step 6: ASSEMBLEALLOF THE ABOVE MATERIALS IN AN ENVELOPE.
The following items should be included:
- Form 1, 2 or 3
- The non-refundable application fee.
- Form 4, recommendation from your guidance counselor or school official.
- Forms 5 and 6, recommendations from current teachers.
- An autobiographical essay.
- A corrected English assignment.
- A transcript of your most recent grades.

International Students
International students should follow steps 1 through 7 and read the following:
Due to postal delays and necessary travel arrangements students are urged to apply early (before April 1).
Students should have a basic knowledge of conversational English, as a beginners level (450/133 TOEFL) course is not offered. If you have recently taken the TOEFL, please forward your scores with your application.
Because international travel regulations can change, we include updated specific travel and visa information in the acceptance packet and on the International page located on this site. Please read information very carefully before initiating any travel plans.
Financial Aid Applicants
All forms must be postmarked no later than March 1. These include:
- Your completed application forms
- Your Financial Aid form
- Copies of 2008 IRS 1040 forms and W2 form
- All IRS supporting documents
- Any other tax forms used
Any falsification of information, misrepresentation or omission of facts called for in this application may result in revocation of admission.
