Teaching Assistants
Program Description
Through its Teaching Assistants Program the Phillips Academy Summer Session offers positions to those who want a chance to test their aspiration to become teachers. Priority is given to those applicants who will have earned their bachelor's degree by June 26, 2010, but consideration will be given to applications from qualified college juniors as well. (Teachers and TAs must be 21 before June 29, 2010)
- Teaching Assistants (TAs) assist in teaching two courses (6 class days per week).
- The TA's experience is rigorous and thoroughly challenging; Phillips Academy requires superior performance of its teachers, TAs, and students alike.
- The Summer Session is short (5 weeks for students; 6 weeks for faculty), intensive, and strongly academic.
- Every class each syllabus is unique. It is fair to say that every TA will have a different experience, based on the needs of the course, the TA's previous experience, and the expectations of the mentor teacher.
- For the classroom component, it can generally be assumed that teaching, supervising students, grading, photocopying, class planning, and researching material can be expected.
- For the residential aspect of the program, TAs live in a dormitory (sharing bathroom facilities with students), being on duty at least 2 nights each week and three weekends during the session.
- TAs also coach an afternoon activity, chaperone social functions and off-campus trips, and facilitate nearly every aspect of a boarding school life.
- In addition to their work with students and faculty, Teaching Assistants participate in the Carter G. Woodson Teaching Assistant Seminar Program consisting of weekly meetings, presentations and pedagogical discussion, as well as opportunities to share with others in the field of education.
- TAs receive remuneration of $3,100 plus meals (while the dining hall is open) and housing.
Dates
TAs arrive oncampus on Friday, June 25th, 2010 for new faculty orientation and depart after all their end of term tasks are completed, but no later than Friday, August 6th. For the 2010 Summer Session, students will arrive oncampus Tuesday, June 29th and depart Wednesday, August 4th.

Interviews and Hiring
After completed applications have been read, a number of applicants will be contacted for an interview. Invitations will be extended by telephone or email to you at your home or school. We will attempt to set a mutually acceptable date for the interview. Typically, interviews begin in January and continue throughout the early spring. When deciding to accept an offer of a position, applicants should be mindful of the limitations on one's personal life that living and working in a residential setting with students entails.
The Summer Session, in accordance with Phillips Academy's policy, does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, disability status, sexual orientation or national or ethnic origin in administration of its education policies, admission policies, scholarship and loan programs and athletic or other school-administered programs.
