Admission FAQs

Thank you for your interest in Andover and for contacting the Admission Office! We find that most applicants and their families have similar questions as they navigate the admission process. To help answer those questions, we’ve created this resource, and we invite you to review it in its entirety. We hope you will find the information you need!

If, after reviewing this message, you still have questions, please feel free to call our office at 978-749-4050 (M-F, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. ET). Thank you for understanding that we might not be able to offer an individual reply via email given the very high volume of messages we receive at this address.

There are two main parts to the application: the online application through the Gateway to Prep Schools common application website, and the virtual admission interview. The deadline for the admission application is February 1, 2022. Our decision release date is March 10, 2022.

Standardized Testing

Most standardized testing will be optional once again this year.

  • While you are welcome to submit test scores, such as SSAT or ISEE scores, they are not required. Choosing to submit or not submit scores will not impact your likelihood of admission.
  • Applicants for whom English is a second language are required to submit either TOEFL or IELTS scores. If you are unable to take the TOEFL or IELTS due to COVID challenges or financial constraints, please let us know. If English is your second language, but you attend a school where you are taught in English, you do not need to submit TOEFL/IELTS scores.

All interviews are being conducted online this year.

  • After you create an account on our interview portal, you can schedule your online interview, conducted via Zoom. You’ll receive the Zoom link by email about 45-60 minutes before your appointment time. Interviews typically take about 25 minutes.
  • Please be sure to complete the Candidate Profile, part one of the Gateway application, before your interview takes place.
  • On our interview portal, a student must be 16 years of age to create an account, so if the student is under 16, the parent will need to create the account. If there are multiple students applying from the same family, each applicant in a family needs to create their own individual account.
  • If you don’t see an available appointment time that works for you, you can check back on the calendar in the future, as we will add new appointments on a rolling basis. Or, feel free to click on the “Request Appointment” button, and you will be paired with one of our alumni interviewers to set up an online interview at a mutually convenient time.
  • Should you need to cancel or reschedule your interview appointment, please log back into the interview portal to do so.
  • Interviews are conducted through the month of January.

Virtual Events

We regret that we are unable to welcome visitors for campus tours and interviews this fall and winter, but we are hosting a number of dynamic online events.

  • Thank you for your understanding as we strive to keep our current students safe and our school fully open!
  • We will organize regular virtual campus tours and other virtual programs throughout the fall. Please visit our virtual events page for the most up-to-date information on these events. You can also begin learning more about Andover right away by visiting our virtual campus visit page, which includes a 360˚ virtual campus tour as well as several videos that we have created to share the Andover experience with prospective students.

Gateway Application Common Questions

Complete the online application through Gateway to Prep Schools. The following are commonly asked questions about the Gateway application:

  • The Candidate Profile is part one of the application. If you have a multimedia link that you’d like to send to us, such as an art portfolio or a sports or performance video, you can do so on either the Candidate Profile, or in part two of the Gateway application. Students most often use a private YouTube account or a Google link.
  • The math teacher recommendation and the English teacher recommendation must be submitted via Gateway by the applicant’s current math and English teachers, rather than by former teachers. If you have a former teacher (in any subject area) who knows you well, you may ask them to submit a personal recommendation. We will accept between one and three personal recommendations.
  • If your recommender does not speak English, they may feel free to submit the recommendation in their native language. An official translation is helpful, but not required.
  • We require grade reports from the first term of the current academic year (“Current Grades”) as well as the prior two academic years (“Transcripts”). For applicants to the 12th grade and the PG program, we require a complete high school transcript.
  • The Transcript Report Form is an additional form that accompanies the current grade report and transcript. You should request the Transcript Report Form via Gateway from the person at your school who handles transcripts (the Registrar’s Office, for example), and they will have the opportunity to attach the current grade report and prior years’ grades to the Transcript Report Form submission.
  • In the “Optional Additional Documents” section, students sometimes choose to submit, for example, a resumé or CV, an award, or an additional writing sample. It is perfectly fine to not submit anything extra.

Financial Aid

The application for financial aid is due by February 1, 2022.

  • We have a “need-blind” admission process, so your application for financial aid does not impact your admission decision.
  • International students are welcome to apply for financial aid.
  • For detailed questions about financial aid, please feel free to email financialaid@andover.edu.
