Matt Hession

Matt teaches U.S. History and a senior elective “House Divided: Political Polarization, Nixon to Obama.”

Matt arrived at Andover in 2005 and has taught a range of courses in the History Department. His primary responsibility includes teaching U.S. History and two senior electives, House Divided: History of Political Polarization, Nixon to Obama and History of 1968: Year in Crisis. His school responsibilities have included serving as the Dean of Flagstaff Cluster from 2011-2017, coaching a range of varsity and jv sports, academic advising, leadership on multiple faculty task forces, and serving on the Community Conduct Council (CCC).

Before joining Phillips Academy, Matt taught at Groton School from 2003-2005.

He lives on campus with his wife, Becky, also a member of the Phillips Academy faculty, and their two children. When they’re not engaged with teaching, coaching, house counseling, or advising Andover students, they enjoy the Adirondacks, rooting for Boston sports teams, and time with family.
