Joshua Donovan
Dr. Joshua Donovan began teaching at Phillips Academy in 2025. He previously taught at Boston College, Columbia University, and the UAE. He received his Ph.D. in Middle East History at Columbia University and has published peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on topics including migration, religion, nationalism, and colonialism. During the summers, he works on his academic book manuscript on Syria and Lebanon's Greek Orthodox Christian community, which is based dissertation research conducted in the Middle East, Europe, and the US. At Andover, he brings this background to the classroom, teaching students how to formulate historical questions, conduct research, and share their findings.
"Youth from every quarter” and "Knowledge and Goodness" are at the core of Donovan's work at PA. As an avid traveler, he is especially passionate about making international students feel at home. He works to create opportunities where students from diverse backgrounds and perspectives can learn from one another.
Donovan also serves as an Outdoor Pursuits instructor and a house counselor in Foxcroft, where he lives with his dog Josh and his husband (also Josh). In his downtime, he likes to cook and hike with the other Joshes. He also sings with the Boston Gay Men's Chorus.
