The final chapter

Five questions for retiring librarian Michael Blake
by Allyson Irish

Throughout his career, Michael Blake has been a toxicology information analyst, a medical librarian, and a business information specialist. Each of these unique experiences ultimately benefited the Andover community.

Blake will retire at the end of this academic year as associate director for instructional services at the Oliver Wendell Holmes Library, a position he held at two different times for a total of nearly 20 years. Although he will miss working with colleagues and students, he will also be happy to sleep in! Below, Blake shares a few parting thoughts.

What have you enjoyed most about your job at the OWHL?

I have worked with some amazing people. I have worked with four directors, each with their own management style and leadership, and each providing new ways to look at the world of librarianship. I have also worked with some wonderful students as they asked for help with their History 300 papers, their Biology 600 independent projects, or for the latest suggestion I might have for their personal reading.

If your job were a book, what would the title be?

How to Handle and Live Through Change

What’s one trait that librarians have in common?

I believe most librarians have the desire to help—and to teach others how to be curious and critical users of information.

Favorite place to read a book?

I have a chair at home that provides the perfect mix of light and comfort.

What is your advice to a new PA employee?

I would advise a new employee to interact with as many members of the community as they can. There are incredible people that work here and that care about each other.

"I have enjoyed interacting with the PA community in all of its intersecting pieces of campus life," says retiring librarian Michael Blake. "Getting to know my faculty and staff colleagues has provided a great sense of community and belonging. Working here has been such a great experience, and I will miss it!
