Inside art

Alum creates colorful anatomical illustrations
by Allyson Irish

When Emma Lowry ’21 looks at an image of a heart, or lungs, or other parts of the human anatomy she sees more than tissue and bones.

“I think it’s quite beautiful the way our bodies are constantly readjusting, fighting, and rewiring based on our experiences and environment. My art comes from imagining what that connection from outside to inside looks like.”

A student at McGill University in Montreal, Lowry is working as a medical assistant in pediatrics at the University of Vermont Medical Center. She plans to get her EMT certification and go on to medical school.

For now, Lowry's artwork is a fun creative hobby shared on her website. She's already sold some of her creations, including the fall 2024 cover of The McGill Journal of Human Behavior.

“My goal is to be both a physician and an artist, and for both of these to build on one another.”
