AWE Inspired
Andover Women’s Endeavor Sets Strategic DirectionFEMALE LEADERS from across the Academy community gathered in New York on May 20 for the first Founders’ Forum of the Andover Women’s Endeavor.
This major development initiative, also known by the acronym AWE, emerged from the milestone celebrations honoring 50 years of coeducation at the school. Launched last spring, AWE seeks to recognize and elevate the profound philanthropic impact women continue to have in all facets of campus life.
“In today’s world, where critical thinking is necessary for our collective future, the Academy is a shining beacon. I believe so deeply in its values,” says Co-Chair Kaaren Shalom ’79, P’17. “Toward that end, AWE is a platform to foster camaraderie among Andover women—and to heighten the role we play, beginning with this highly committed group who have joined together to lean into the school’s mission.
“It’s thrilling that they’re ready to contribute their incredible talents to support the intellectual curiosity that unites all Andover students and alumni.”
The New York event convened most of the 50-plus founders of this burgeoning group. All have contributed $100,000 or more to priorities important to the Academy—and aligned with their own visions for charitable giving. The founders will become the architects of AWE and will help form plans to welcome members at various levels of investment.
“This forum, and our future convenings, aim to create a space where we can channel this group’s tremendous energy and non sibi spirit, forge meaningful connections, and bridge generations— linking with mentors who blazed the trail and emerging leaders who will carry their efforts forward,” says Co-Chair Katherine Jollon Colsher ’96.
At the forum, the opening session provided insight into the Academy’s finances, with discussions led by Board President and AWE Convening Chair Amy C. Falls ’82, P’19, ’21, and Kirsten L. Glantz, the school’s chief investment officer. Deputy Head of School Merrilee Mardon P’27 then shared lessons from the Academy’s Learning Steering Committee, which were followed by roundtable conversations on AWE’s objectives for mentoring, networking, and programming.
Willow Bay ’81, dean of the USC Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism, was a featured speaker, capping the first of many opportunities for Andover’s female leaders to impart their expertise in this new collective.
