Robert S. Peabody Institute of Archaeology

Special Notice from the Peabody

The Peabody Institute building will be undergoing much-needed renewal work in 2023. This will improve the building conditions for humans and for our significant collections. We will be closed to the public through February 2024.

The collections and archives will be unavailable for research access from January 2023 through February 2024. NAGPRA and consultation inquiries will be prioritized but may experience a delayed response. Contact Curator of Collection, Marla Taylor, at [email protected] with any questions.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Welcome to the Peabody

Robert S. Peabody, Class of 1857, founded our institution in 1901 with three goals in mind: to introduce the students of Phillips Academy to the world of archaeology, to promote archaeological research, and to provide a place for students to gather.

Today’s Peabody Institute employs collaborative learning to actively engage students, teachers, scientists, and Native Americans with the institute’s significant archaeology and anthropology collections, while also encouraging and enlivening cultural discourse on race and gender.

Exhibitions are not our focus, however, we are happy to talk with you about what we do or provide a tour of our collections. For more information visit our blog at peabody.andover.edu or contact us at 978.749.4490 or [email protected].
