Financial Aid FAQs

As you consider independent school options, learn more about the how the financial aid at Andover meets the needs of 48% of the overall student body. For more detailed information, please do not hesitate to contact the Financial Aid Office.

What does it mean that Andover has a "need blind" admission initiative?

With a “need blind” admission program, Andover will extend its resources to offer admission to every qualified young person regardless of their families’ ability to pay the cost of an Andover education and we are proud to say that we meet 100 percent of each admitted student’s demonstrated financial need. Andover’s commitment to “youth from every quarter” is truly representative of its historic effort to provide a world-class education to the leaders of tomorrow regardless of their families’ economic circumstances. Andover actively works to identify those students who are best able to contribute to and benefit from the Phillips Academy experience. The “need blind” initiative will offer broader opportunities in recruiting and access. In particular, the “need blind” initiative will help to reduce a commonly held perception that the cost of an Andover education is prohibitive. The “sticker shock” of a private school education often discourages middle income families from applying. Our hope is that the “need blind” initiative will help to encourage those families to apply.

The “need blind” admission initiative suggests that Andover will support 100% of a family's demonstrated need. What does that mean?

The “need blind” initiative confirms our commitment to creating access to Andover’s educational opportunity. The reason we broadcast that Andover will support 100% of a family’s demonstrated need is to help families understand that Andover does not engage in a common financial aid practice known as “gapping.” Most NAIS member schools “gap” their financial aid awards by not fully funding the level of financial need demonstrated through the financial aid process. Many schools attempt to stretch their financial aid budgets by allocating smaller grants to more students, which restricts some families' ability to return year after year in the wake of partial funding. Also, the practice of gapping creates more pressure on the school to consider those who can afford to pay more, over those who can pay less, making ability to pay a partial factor in the enrollment decision.

How is "demonstrated need" calculated?

Andover awards financial aid scholarship grants based upon demonstrated financial need. Parents are expected to contribute according to their available resources, taking into account total income, assets, number of dependents and other appropriate information. Financial aid scholarship grants do not need to be paid back and are used to offset the total cost of attendance, including tuition, fees and curriculum-related costs. We evaluate the financial need of each family based on the total cost of attendance rather than on tuition alone. Andover calculates the family contribution based on national standards for variations in size of family; number of children in tuition charging institutions; cost of living; a sliding scale for home equity for home values above $650,000; and a host of unusual family circumstances, including: child support, nursing home or assisted living support for elderly family members, natural disasters, serious illness and loss of employment.

How does Andover know that a student is applying for financial aid?

To apply for financial aid, please visit the Andover website at www.andover.edu and follow the link for Admission. Please complete Part One of the application online and make sure that you check “YES” to indicate that you intend to apply for financial aid. Visit www.sss.nais.org after October 24 to complete the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) online. On the SSS website, you will receive instructions about submitting required backup documents by mail.

What are the procedures for completing the financial aid application?

Starting on October 24 go to www.sss.nais.org. Click on the prompt to begin your Parents' Financial Statement (PFS). You need only complete one PFS even if you have several children applying to an independent school. You will be given instructions about submitting required backup documents online.

How is the Report of Family Contribution (RFC) determined?

When you submit the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS), the School Scholarship Service (SSS) processing center will enter your information into a calculation and the result is your Report of Family Contribution (RFC). The RFC is just a guideline to help the Andover Financial Aid Office recalculate your eligibility for support. The RFC is based on an assessment of your family’s income, assets and unusual family circumstances.

When will we be notified of our financial aid scholarship award?

You will receive notification of your financial aid scholarship award at the time you receive notification of admission to Phillips Academy. All newly admitted students who have submitted the PFS by February 1 will be notified on MARCH 10. Returning Students who have submitted the PFS by February 1 are notified of their financial aid award in early April.

What if tax information is unavailable at the time of application?

We understand that your current Income Tax Return may not be prepared by our application deadline. Therefore, we ask you to ESTIMATE your tax information on the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) and submit the most recent tax return available. As soon as your current year Income Tax Return is complete, we ask that you upload to www.sss.nais.org. Remember, as mentioned above, we must have a copy of your most recent Income Tax Return with schedules before we can confirm your financial aid scholarship award.

What is the deadline to apply for financial aid?

You must apply online by February 1.

What if I missed the financial aid application deadline, but I am very interested in Andover. Is it too late?

No - you are not too late; however, you should submit your application materials as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the fewer funds are available.

If two children from the same family are applying for financial aid, do we have to submit two applications?

No! You need to complete only one Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS). The PFS allows you to file for up to three children on one form.

What is the policy for divorced or separated parents applying for financial aid?

Both the custodial parent (and any spouse) and the non-custodial parent (and any spouse) should file a Parents' Financial Statement (PFS) with the School Scholarship Service, SSS/NAIS, as stated in the instructions. Each parent must also submit the required tax forms.

As a non-custodial parent, should I file a special financial aid form?

All non-custodial parents are required to complete the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS).

What if the non-custodial divorced parent is unknown or non-compliant?

We will consider waiving the requirement for the non-custodial parent to submit the PFS if information is provided that clearly indicates that the location of the non-custodial parent is unknown, has provided no support and has had no contact with the family in years. In these cases, documentation clarifying the situation will be accepted from a psychological, spiritual or legal counselor with knowledge of the family's situation.

Is financial aid renewable?

Families must complete the Parents’ Financial Statement (PFS) every year. Financial Aid Scholarships Grants are renewed annually provided there is continued demonstrated financial need.

Will I receive the same financial aid award each year?

As long as the family contribution remains the same and you meet the application deadline of February 1, Financial Aid Scholarships Grant assistance from Andover should not change. However, if there is a substantial change in your family's circumstances, grant assistance may vary.
