Dyran, Senior

"Learning—and making mistakes—with my classmates has made my music experience really fun."

Andover’s music program is a big reason I decided to come here. Now I play the trombone in the jazz and concert bands. Learning—and making mistakes—with my classmates has made my music experience really fun.

At the holiday All-School Meeting, I improvised in front of the entire school for the first time. My legs were shaking even before I stood up. But then I heard all the encouraging shouts from my friends. To this day, it’s the best solo I’ve ever played.

Dyran is a dorm proctor and a member of Brotherhood, an affinity group for Black/Latinx/Indigenous boys and men on campus. Through a community engagement program, he enjoys teaching chess to middle schoolers. Great memory: when Tina Fuller, an international saxophonist, rehearsed and performed with the PA Jazz Band.
