Charles Porter Mattocks, Class of 1858

Major, 17th Maine Infantry

The Medal of Honor was awarded to Major Mattocks for valor at the Battle of Sailors Creek, Virginia on April 6, 1865. The citation noted that he “displayed extraordinary gallantry in leading a charge of his regiment which resulted in the capture of a large number of prisoners and a stand of colors.” Following the Civil War, Mattocks returned to his law practice, later became a judge, and returned to military service as a brigadier general during the Spanish-American War.
