February 19, 2021 — FINIS ORIGINE PENDET: NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory mechanical engineer Sarah Sherman '04 shared this image with us after reflecting on a successful Perseverance Mars landing. "I was a Junior (freshman) in Double Brick (s/o to my roommate Tess Chu!) when history teacher and sometimes house-counselor Mary Minard and I got to talking about big life goals. I explained how rowing *is* life and I wanted to be in the olympics, which she either thought was unbefitting for a lady or not ambitious enough - hard to tell with Ms. Minard. With that fire lit, I wrote my much grander To Do List of Life on an index card that night. Here it is. Number 3 reads “Build a robot to walk on Mars.” As of today, I’ll call it complete. I never did go to the olympics, but I have Ms. Minard to thank for encouraging a 14 year old to make some audacious goals. Huge thanks to David Stern (my chemistry teacher and advisor) and Pete Washburn (my crew coach) for launching me in the right direction." Set goals. Dream big. Anything is possible! | 1,541 likes, 29 comments
