Teaching and learning central to reorganization
Head of School John Palfrey P’21 announces new leadership structureAn administrative reorganization announced by Head of School John Palfrey P’21 emphasizes teaching and learning as a single reporting unit, elevates the roles of veteran deans to assistant heads, and creates new opportunities for faculty advancement.
Formerly the dean of studies, Clyfe Beckwith has been named assistant head of school for teaching and learning. He will oversee the academic team including both the dean of studies and dean of faculty. Nominations and applications for both positions are currently being accepted, with preference for internal candidates.
Patrick Farrell, current dean of faculty who has served in the role for six years, had previously shared his intention to return to the mathematics faculty full-time in fall 2019.
Other senior administrative title changes:
- Linda Carter Griffith, associate head of school for equity, inclusion and wellness
- Jim Ventre ’79, assistant head of school for admission and financial aid
- Jenny Elliott ’94, assistant head of school for residential life, dean of students
- Ferd Alonso, assistant head of school for operations and finance
Seeking input prior to these decisions, among others that were shared in a campus email, Palfrey heard from a number of faculty, staff, administrators, and trustees. “One of the most consistent suggestions I heard is that we should elevate a position related to the academic program, and thereby provide greater support and professional development for faculty,” he said.
“These changes are significant, particularly in the area of teaching and learning, and warrant further iteration as we put this new model into practice,” he added. “I continue to be impressed by the Andover community’s shared commitment to excellence in teaching and learning.”
