Academy Mourns Passing of George Bundy Smith ’55

Judge Smith was planning to be on campus to receive the Andover Alumni Award of Distinction in November

Retired judge George Bundy Smith, who sat on New York state’s highest court for 14 years and, earlier in his life, was arrested as a civil rights “Freedom Rider,” died Saturday, August 5, 2017, after a short illness. He was 80.

A former Andover trustee, Judge Smith received the Academy’s 1985 Claude Moore Fuess Awardfor distinguished contributions to public service and was planning to be on campus to receive the Andover Alumni Award of Distinction in November.
