CAMD Scholar Presentation
Thao Pham ’25
CAMD Scholar Thao Pham ’25 explores the development of colorism in Vietnam and its impact on Vietnamese society over time, from the precolonial era to the modern day. Pham demonstrates how the nation’s current light-skin bias disproportionately affects its ethnic minorities and women of lower socioeconomic status and examines how colorism is continually perpetuated through different facets of Vietnamese culture.
Through her research, Pham aims to spread awareness about the possible deep-rooted nature of colorism in both racially homogeneous and heterogeneous communities around the world and to prompt us to think critically about initiatives we can take to begin undoing the effects of this social injustice.
