Gracia Real de Santa Teresa de Mose was a beacon of opportunity for enslaved Africans in the Southeast. Founded in 1738 by the Spanish governor of East Florida, the small fort, and its surrounding town and agricultural fields, were a manifestation of the freedom won by emancipated Africans in Florida, many of whom had escaped slavery in the adjacent British colonies. The long struggle to establish the fort, and the politics surrounding its occupation, are revealing of the ways in which emergent ideas about race, citizenship, and community were negotiated in this colonial borderland. This talk focuses on the current archaeological investigations at the site, both terrestrial and underwater, and simultaneous efforts to document and celebrate the ongoing work of a dedicated community organization that has protected the site for over 30 years.
