Born and raised in Mississippi, Angie Thomas now calls Atlanta her home. A former teen rapper, she holds a BFA in creative writing from Belhaven University. Her award-winning debut novel, The Hate U Give, is a #1 New York Times bestseller and became a major motion picture from 20th Century Fox in 2018. Thomas’s highly acclaimed second novel, On the Come Up, was published in 2019.

Many groundbreaking Black athletes who famously defied racism and discrimination as professionals in their sport—like track superstar Jesse Owens in the 1936 Olympics—first battled these same forces on their college campuses.
Join Tamrat Gavenas as he presents “A History of Trade-Offs: The Black Scholar-Athlete in U.S. Colleges, 1968–2023.”

Join classmates for this production of Truth Be Told, created by students in THD910. The ensemble will present monologues and vignettes based on their own experiences with various aspects of identity, including race, class, gender, and sexuality at PA and beyond. Directed by Michela Rowland ’24. Juniors will be assigned to one of the three performances.

LOWERS: With Drawn Arms
With Drawn Arms is an intimate conversation with Tommie Smith, the gold medalist who is known for raising his fist in protest of racial inequality after accepting two medals at the 1968 Olympic games. Lowers will watch the movie and hear from current and former Black student-athlete/activists.
