Julie Lythcott-Haims

7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., Kemper Auditorium

Award-winning author speaks on how to best support resiliency and resourcefulness in teens

Based on her New York Times bestseller, Julie Lythcott-Haims will draw on her own insights as a mother and a student dean to highlight the ways in which over-parenting harms children, their stressed- out parents, and society at large. While empathizing with parental hopes and fears, Lythcott-Haims inspires audiences to examine their behaviors and join the growing movement to allow children to develop the resourcefulness, resilience, and inner determination necessary for success.

How to Raise an Adult emerged from Lythcott-Haims’s decade as dean of freshmen at Stanford University, where she was known for her fierce advocacy for young adults and her fierce critique of the growing trend of parental involvement in the day-to-day lives of college students. Her book gave rise to a 2016 TED Talk that garnered more than three million views.

Books will be available for purchase, and a book signing will follow the presentation.

Julie Lythcott-Haims’s visit is sponsored by the College Counseling Office, Office of Community and Multicultural Development, Dean of Students Office, Office of the Head of School, Rebecca M. Sykes Wellness Center, and Parents of Students of Phillips Academy (PSPA) and is made possible by the John H. Hosch III Memorial Fund.
