Brace Student Fellow Presentation

Max Berkenblit ’24

According to the 2023 State of the Academy, only 46.9% of men-identifying students at Andover also identify as feminists compared to the student body average of 70.8%. Why?

Through his research, Max Berkenblit ’24 argues that far too many students—most of whom are cisgender, heterosexual men—go through their time at Andover without understanding the very basics of women’s, gender, and sexuality studies. Thus, he proposes an introductory-level curriculum to introduce the subject to all juniors. With each lesson focusing on building community, empathy, and understanding, he uses pedagogic theory to create a safe but deliberately challenging course that calls on students to critically think about their own gender identity, sexuality, and role within gender-based oppression. Berkenblit’s teach-ins aim to leave students with a greater understanding of one another, themselves, and the world around them.
