Phillips Academy presents 'The Nutcracker'

Start Date: December 12 7:00 PM
This event is open to the public

The Phillips Academy Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to present its version of the classic ballet, The Nutcracker. Directed and choreographed by Judith Wombwell, the famous ballet has been performed by Phillips Academy students since 1996. Ms. Wombwell, along with original design team Billy Murray and Bruce Bacon, has re-imagined the setting to represent colonial Andover with mice and soldiers becoming revolutionary war figures and party guests celebrating in the Abbot barn. Clara’s journey through the holiday tree into the Land of Sweets remains true to the original ballet in its timeless story of a child’s fantasy.

This year’s production of The Nutcracker includes an exciting redesigned Act II set incorporating new choreography. The Nutcracker’s key role of Clara is shared by senior Olivia Berkey, captain of the Andover Dance Group, and Elizabeth McGonagle. Other lead roles include Sabrina Appleby and Janice Cheon sharing the role of the Snow Queen, Marion Kudla as Dew Drop and Erica Nork as lead Arabian. The Grand Pas de Deux will be performed by Boston Ballet soloists Dalay Parrondo and Brad Schlagheck in the featured roles of the Sugar Plum Fairy and her Cavalier. In addition to the Nutcracker’s principal dancers, this year’s production will include over 60 cast members including Phillips Academy students, faculty members and young children from the PA community. Faculty members include Tina and Kevin Graber, John Maier, Erin E Strong, John Rogers, Genevieve Barron, Nef Francis, Howard Kalter, Terrell Ivory, Amanda Washington, Aya Murata, and Mika Latva-Kokko. Drosselmeyer will be played by Carlos Hoyt.

The elegant new Act II set was designed by faculty member Billy Murray and built by technical director Jake Josef. The re-imagined Land of the Sweets features a Sugar Plum Palace floating amongst clouds above the magical tree. New choreography will be incorporated into the set design and will feature angels who greet Clara and the Nutcracker Prince as they ascend into the Land of the Sweets.

The Nutcracker will be performed in the Tang Theatre on the Phillips Academy campus, Friday, December 12th at 7:00 p.m., Saturday, December 13th at 2:30 and 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, December 14th at 2:00 p.m. Admission is $20 for general public and $10 for Phillips Academy community. Tickets can be reserved by calling the Phillips Academy box office at 978-749-4433.
