Head Coach

Paul Tortorella '80

A graduate of Andover’s class of 1980 and winner of the Sumner Smith award for the team’s MVP which prompted his coach Ted Harrison to call him “the best goaltender [he] ever coached,” Coach Tortorella enjoyed a stellar four year career as the goaltender for Yale University, helping lead the team into national prominence under legendary coach Tim Taylor. Tortorella has been coaching hockey since graduating Yale in 1984. Prior to returning to Andover as a member of the English Department in 2001, he taught English, was Athletic Director and coached many teams in a variety of sports, including baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and both boys and girls hockey at The Nichols School in Buffalo, New York. As Athletic Director at Nichols, he was instrumental in starting and molding the Girls’ hockey program, which soon captured the Canadian Independent School Association championship. At Andover, besides being a member of the hockey coaching staff, he was head house counselor at America House for eight years. He continues to teach English, is an active member of the school’s Student Disability Committee, and is an academic advisor. In regard to his latest appointment, Tortorella states: “It is an honor to coach in the rink named after my own coach at Andover. I have always been dedicated to working with young people from all walks of life helping them shape and achieve their dreams and I will continue to do so on and off the ice.” Coach Tortorella and his family— his wife Mary and boys Connor and Aidan—love being part of the Phillips Academy community.
