College Counseling

The College Counseling Program at the Phillips Academy Summer Session is unique among independent school programs. Several opportunities exist to offer individual, group and personalized information and experiences to guide you in the college selection process.

The program includes weekly college visits, an Andover-sponsored college fair, individual college counseling sessions with a counseling professional, and four-days-per-week afternoon workshops that bring admissions officers from prestigious colleges and universities around the country to the Phillips Academy campus.

The College Fair

Representatives from approximately 100+ colleges come together to meet students, answer questions and distribute information. This is an excellent opportunity to explore colleges you never considered and learn more about those with which you might already be familiar.

Afternoon Workshops

The afternoon workshop schedule, while not identical each year, will feature a comparable selection of topics and speakers, all of whom are full-time admissions professionals from highly selective institutions.

Prior topics have included:

  • Admissions at highly selective institutions
  • Considerations for international students applying to U.S. college and universities
  • Evaluating the college application essay
  • Preparing for the college interview
  • Building your extracurricular activities and resume
  • Paying for college: Financial aid and scholarships
  • Researching colleges: Resources for starting your college search

College Visits

This summer’s trips will be offered to nine colleges in the New England Area. Students are asked to sign up for each week’s trip in advance on the Thursday before the scheduled trip. All college trips occur on Wednesdays. Visits will be offered to:

  • Amherst College
  • Boston College
  • Boston University
  • Brown University
  • Dartmouth College
  • Harvard University
  • Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)
  • Tufts University
  • Wellesley College
  • Yale University

Individual Counseling

The program also includes one-on-one counseling with an experienced college counseling professional and offers the student the opportunity to delve further into the college selection process. The student can take advantage of these meetings during specified office hours.
