Designing a home for music

A purpose-built center for music. It’s a first at Andover. And it’ll nearly double the space devoted to the musical arts—all to benefit the 700-plus students who participate in classes, lessons, performances, and more each year.

The 30,000-square-foot facility will rise on Phillips Street, adjacent to the Peabody Institute, and will become the western anchor of a newly defined “cultural corridor” on campus. The focal point will be a sleek performance hall with seating for 250 audience members, complemented by three flexible ensemble areas, three classrooms, and 19 practice rooms.

Other enhancements? An electronic music studio, two technology labs, and a “rock room” with recording and broadcast capabilities.

Fundraising for the new music center is ongoing, with a groundbreaking date to be set once the building’s goal is met.

The center’s striking exterior offers bold lines and will invite plenty of natural sunlight inside.

Music education and performance at Andover is so vibrant today, and the new center will help faculty bring our students’ talents to life in ways both personal and profound.

An internal courtyard or “civic court” will further boost the building’s connectivity, providing a lively spot for conversation and impromptu jam sessions.
