Morocco: Gateway to Africa
“Morocco: Gateway to Africa” will allow students to sample a wide range of life in this fascinating North African country. From the peaceful countryside to bustling cities, from modern-day schools to the world’s oldest university, our travelers will explore many of Morocco’s most fascinating destinations. With plenty of opportunities to interact with Moroccan natives, PA students will get a true taste of the country as well as a chance to make meaningful connections. Art, culture, food, religion, and history will all come to life when students visit the “old cities” of Fes and Marrakech with their winding, narrow streets, the vibrant and busy modern urban setting of Rabat. They will explore quaint villages on foot and by camel on the beach, and will also have opportunities to play soccer, shop for souvenirs, chat with Moroccan contemporaries and entrepreneurs, and relax at a public bath (hammam). Since the journey takes place during a part of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, PA travelers will witness the unique atmosphere that happens for one lunar month every year in Muslim-majority countries. For Muslims, the month of Ramadan is a time of fasting, prayer, and more subdued activities in the daytime. When the sun sets, however, the streets come alive with food, energy, and excitement! Throughout it all, PA students will have plenty of downtime to journal or blog, rest, snack, and converse with their fellow group members. It promises to be an unforgettable excursion!
No prerequisites. Knowledge of French would be helpful but not necessary. Some basic Arabic instruction will be provided.
