Join fellow Andover community members Libby O'Hare ’96 and Margaret Doles ’97 for a non sibi project with Bread for the City in Washington, D.C. The mission of Bread for the City is to “help DC residents living with low income to develop their power to determine the future of their own communities. We provide food, clothing, medical care, and legal and social services to reduce the burden of poverty.” The Bread for the City food team packs and distributes 800-1,200 grocery bags daily for community members all over D.C. and relies heavily on volunteer support!

Volunteer Tasks:

  • Your shift will consist of creating the grocery bags (triple-bagging to ensure the bag stays intact through its delivery!) and packing those grocery bags with canned goods and fresh produce. Bread for the City partners with DoorDash, whose drivers help deliver these bags every weekday morning. You may also be supplementing grocery bags with hygiene items or sorting clothing donations. Your help during this time is so needed and appreciated!
  • Each shift includes tasks that can be done seated. Much of the can bagging includes standing and some lifting. Please let us know if you have any further questions regarding accessibility concerns as Bread for the City will be happy to accommodate.

What each volunteer needs to complete prior:

  • General Liability Waiver: please complete this waiver online prior to volunteering
  • COVID-19 vaccinated and masked: For the safety of volunteers, staff, and the vulnerable population that this project serves, Bread for the City requires all volunteers to be masked and fully vaccinated against COVID-19, including at least one booster shot. A staff member will check proof of vaccination upon your arrival, including your physical card, photo of card, or verification app. Volunteers are required to wear an N95 or KN95 mask. A mask can be provided one if needed.
  • Work appropriate attire: we recommend wearing comfortable clothing and supportive shoes. Feel free to bring water/coffee/snacks as you need
