"The Evolution of Community within the Music Departments of
Abbot Academy and Phillips Academy:
How Music Propelled a Society Forward"

Presented by
John Moreland '18

John Moreland '18's research paper and presentation,
"The Evolution of Community within the Music Departments of Abbot Academy and Phillips Academy: How Music Propelled a Society Forward," explores trends within the Music Department of Abbot Academy and Phillips Academy both pre-merger and post-merger, focusing on the inherently communal nature of music. His work examines the pedagogy and personal approaches to musicianship of former Music Department faculty members, ultimately seeking to discover how music can propel a society forward.

Although Abbot Academy and Phillips Academy were formerly two separate institutions,
the two academies had a longtime affiliation with each other pre-merger. Despite these affiliations, there were very few ties between the two schools, the main reason being that they were strictly single-sex schools. Music, however, has a long history of being one of the few bridges between the two academies. For what reason was music an exception to this strict separation?
