CAMD Scholar | How Music Propelled a Society Forward

12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m., Kemper Auditorium

The Office of Community and Multicultural Development (CAMD) invites alumni/ae, parents, and friends to a CAMD scholar presentation.

"How Music Propelled a Society Forward"

Presented by
John Moreland ’18

Although Abbot Academy and Phillips Academy were separate institutions prior to their merger in 1973, they had a longtime affiliation. Nevertheless, the single-sex structure of each school divided the communities that attended them. Why, then, was the music community an exception to this norm?

Music has a long history of being one of the few bridges between the two academies. John Moreland ’18’s research explores trends within the music departments of Abbot Academy and Phillips Academy both pre- and post-merger, focusing on the inherently communal nature of music. His work examines the pedagogy and personal approaches to musicianship of former music department faculty members. Moreland invites us to consider how music can propel a society forward.

The CAMD Scholar program, established in 2006, allows selected students to pursue independent summer research projects related to diversity, multiculturalism, community, and/or identity with the guidance of a faculty advisor.
