2:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., Kemper Auditorium

Followed by a Q&A with Dr. Gittens ’89

On MLK Day in 1989, senior Brian Gittens skipped classes to protest the limited recognition of Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a national holiday. He sat on the steps of Samuel Phillips Hall all day. Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech—playing repeatedly on his boombox—drew dozens of fellow students and faculty to the peaceful protest. Twenty-six years later, Jack McGovern ’15 immortalized that day and enumerated the changes it brought to campus in his film The Story of Brian Gittens. The 45-minute screening will be followed by a conversation with Dr. Gittens.

Gittens is currently the associate dean for human resources, equity, and inclusion at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. After graduating from Andover, Gittens earned a BA degree from Virginia Tech and a doctoral degree from George Washington University, and spent 13 years in the U.S. Marine Corps.

Free and open to the public.
