Big Love

7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m., Tang Theatre

The Phillips Academy Department of Theatre and Dance is pleased to present the winter play, Big Love. Director Billy Murray brings to life Charles Mee’s adaption of Aeschylus’ “The Suppliants” on the Tang Stage and also touring to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival this summer!

The play is a modern reexamination of western norms regarding gender and sexuality. Fifty women, arranged to be married, escape their bondage in search of independence. When their fifty grooms pursue them to enforce the wedding contract, conflict ensues raising issues of basic humanity.  The characters explore the potential variations of love and power and, at the climax, resort to unimaginable violence. Ultimately, Mee’s piece uses the extremes of gender behavior to draw our attention away from conflict to the more important wonders of life.

The cast of Big Love includes Araba Aidoo ’20, Emma Brown ’19, Cheyn Cole ’19, Zari Cordova-Potter ’20, Jackson Diodati ’20, Junah Jang ’20, Brian Ko ’19, Shyan Koul ’19, Will Locke ’19, Hosshini Suraj ’19, Lesley Tilghman ’19, and Sam Wright ’19. Big Love is stage managed by Carley Kukk ’19 and assistant directed by Sasha Carnes ’19, and features prop design by Myles Ringel ’21, projection design by Minji Shin ’20, and costume designs by Ina Megalli ’20.
