An Epic Clash of Two American Legends

7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m., Cochran Chapel

A talk by Daniel Sharfstein, author of Thunder in the Mountains: Chief Joseph, Oliver Otis Howard, and the Nez Perce War

The Nez Perce War, an armed conflict between Native American tribes and the U.S. Army, stemmed from the refusal of several bands of the Nez Perce to give up their ancestral lands and move to a reservation in Idaho. The war tested America’s vision of freedom and equality and challenged the limit of what government should do for its people—a conversation as timely now as it was in 1877.

Please join us for a presentation by Daniel Sharfstein about his new book, Thunder in the Mountains. An associate professor of law at Vanderbilt University, Sharfstein is a graduate of Harvard College and Yale Law School. He has been awarded fellowships for research on the legal history of race in the United States from Harvard, New York University, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

Books will be available for sale, and a book signing will follow the event.
