Academy Jazz Band with Thomas Chapin Guest Artist Tia Fuller, saxophone

On Sunday, May 12 at 3:00 p.m., in the Cochran Chapel on the Phillips Academy campus, the Department of Music will present the Academy Jazz Band in concert with Thomas Chapin Guest Artist: Tia Fuller’s “Diamond Cut” featuring the Berklee All-Stars.

Tia Fuller perfectly balances the worlds of performance and education as a touring artist as well as full-time professor at the Berklee College of Music. She was selected to be a member of the all-female band touring with Beyoncé. Tia has played in various venues throughout the world and has appeared on number of major television shows including the 2010 Grammy Awards. She performed as the featured soloist with Beyoncé for President Obama at the White House. Tia is an accomplished performer in her own right and has recorded four CDs with her quartet just completing her 5th trio recording, the Grammy nominated Diamond Cut. Tia’s quartet has performed world-wide, including: Edinburgh jazz festivals, and NYC’s prestigious Lincoln Center’s: Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, just to name a few. Tia also tours regularly with a number of bands, including: Terri Lyne Carrington’s Grammy-winning ‘Mosaic’ Project and Money Jungle Provocative in Blue, the assistant musical director for Esperanza Spalding’s Radio Music Society tour, and Dianne Reeves’ Grammy winning, Beautiful Life tour. For her concert at Phillips Academy, she will be joined by an expanded Tia Fuller's "Diamond Cut"; Tia Fuller - Alto Sax, Jeremy Alvarez - Trumpet, Ethan Santos - Trombone, Raven Moran - Guitar, Wilfie Williams - Piano, Ciaran Fontenot - Bass, and Ivanna Coesta - drums.

The Phillips Academy Jazz band, under the direction of Christopher Gagne, will perform works by Neil Hefti, Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, Bob Brookmeyer, Michael League, and Tia Fuller. The Combos will perform Thelonius Monk’s Blue Monk and Kamasi Washington’s Fists of Fury.

This concert is free and open to the public. Cochran Chapel is handicapped accessible.
