The
Department of Theatre and Dance offers students extraordinary opportunities
to acquire and develop skills in all aspects of performance and
production. A
diverse course
of studies and an extensive performance
schedule provide an unparalleled foundation in dramatic theory
and production, in preparation for the student's continued
development at the collegiate level.
The
department performs in two dedicated theatres. The Frances Young
Tang Theatre is our largest space, seating a maximum of 350 in its
proscenium configuration. Designed
as a flexible space, the Tang can also be configured for thrust
or arena productions. Both student-directed shows and faculty productions
are mounted in the Steinbach Theatre, a 40' x 50' black box theatre
that features a stretch-wire tension grid for improved lighting
access. Both theatres are equipped with computerized lighting control
systems and digital audio.
A series
of small, experimental productions is performed on Sunday evenings
in the theatre classroom with limited technical elements. For additional
production information, see the FAQ.
The
faculty comprises seven full and part-time teachers, including two
dance instructors and two designers. Students can draw on the extensive
professional experience of our faculty for an understanding of how
professional theatre and dance companies operate, either as profit
or not-for-profit organizations.
