Step It Up Andover

On this historic day, April 14th 2007, Americans called on their leaders to act immediately to stop global warming. In all 50 states, at more than 1400 iconic places across the nation, we have united around a common call to action: "Step It Up Congress: Cut Carbon 80% by 2050."

Phillips Academy students, faculty and staff partnered with concerned adults and students from all public and private schools in Andover to participate in April 14th’s National Day of Climate Action

Event Summary:
Youth, music and community were the hallmarks of Andover's Step It Up 2007 National Day for Climate Action drawing about 350 enthusiastic supporters to historic Old Town Hall. All 14 of Andover's public and private school students collaborated to create the Step It Up banner. Participants sang along with local musician Pat Scanlon as he called for an end to global warming to the tune of "You Are My Sunshine." Andover's State Senator Susan Tucker and two State Representatives Barry Finegold and Barbara L'Italien addressed the audience and called for community members to STEP IT UP and work toward cutting carbon emissions. Hundreds took part in the group picture, visited information tables set by local organizations and schools and listened to music from Andover High and Phillips Academy students.

Detailed Schedule:
Step It Up Andover, on Saturday, April 14, upstairs in Andover’s Old Town Hall at 10:30 a.m.

The national group who planned the April 14 National Day of Climate Action, Step It Up 2007, has as its goal to urge Congress to step up its response to global warming and commit to cutting carbon emissions 80 percent by 2050. There are more than 1,300 such rallies planned throughout all 50 states. Photographs will be taken at each of the rallies, then combined into a “visual petition” to be sent to Congress and also posted on the Web site www.stepitup2007.org.

Step It Up Andover will feature local singer-songwriter and environmental activist Pat Scanlon will perform. Andover’s state representatives, Sue Tucker, Barry Finegold, and Barbara L’Italien, will speak briefly.

Students from all public and private schools in Andover have collaborated to make a “Step It Up” banner. A photograph of our large group with the banner will be taken and added to all the other photos taken throughout the U.S.

Student musicians from Andover High School and PA’s Yorkies a cappella group will perform, as well as PA’s Under the Bed improv theatre group. There will also be information tables from 11 a.m.–1:30 p.m. about what individuals can do about global warming.
