SUMMERNET - FAQ  

Are all new students eligible for this program? No. Only new ninth and new tenth graders are eligible.

I'm not going to Andover. May I participate in Summernet? Sorry, no.

Do I get academic credit for this program? No.

Do I need to have Internet access at home? No. If you can use an Internet computer at the library, at school, or at someone's place of work, that is fine. You will have to submit drafts and final versions of your writing, as well as do the reading and vocabulary assignments on the World-Wide Web using a web browser. .

Do I need my own email account? Yes, you need your own email account or screen name. You may not use family email for Summernet. You can get a free email account from Yahoo or Hotmail.

What are the dates for Summernet? Summernet begins in the last week of June, and runs into the first week of August. It is fine to be away during that time, but if you are gone for more than a week, you will need to find Internet access during that time.

Do I need to use Microsoft Word? You can use any word processor, or a simple text editor like Notepad or Simple Text. Be sure to save your essays as TEXT. The math program does not require any special software.

How many assignments are there in the writing program? There are FOUR assignments. Each assignment involves reading a short story on the Web, learning vocabulary from that story, and then writing an essay. The essay is not about the story, but some of the stories contain models for the essays. For some of the assignments two weeks are allotted; sometimes just a week.

How long are the essays? Each assignment, which is posted on the Summernet web site on Sunday night, gives a suggested length. Most are short - 250 words or so.

How many "drafts" of each essay will I do? That depends on how well you write. Generally, your tutor will not push you beyond two drafts.

How much work is there in the math program? There are four units to cover during Summernet. Although students work at different paces, we do not expect the work to overwhelm you.

What do I do when my family goes on vacation? You go, too! Just remember to tell your tutor. The four assignments are spread over six weeks so that you can move around in the summer, as long as you are not away from the Internet for more than one week at a time.

I put an essay in my tutor's Workshop several days ago and I haven't heard anything. Don't worry. remember that the tutor has lots of writers sending essays. She'll get back to you. Keep checking for comments.
