Charter Trustee Richard Goodyear ’59 stepped down in October after 13 years as chair of the Trustee Committee on Academy Resources. The committee oversees and advises the board and administration on matters pertaining to fund raising, volunteering, alumni relations, communications and publications. He remains on the academy’s Board of Trustees.

Throughout his years of committee leadership, especially as national vice chair of Campaign Andover, Goodyear has overseen a growing number of dedicated volunteers, who have, through fund raising and other aspects of alumni and parent outreach, helped maintain a strong foundation for Phillips Academy.

A trustee since 1989, Goodyear has also served on the Andover Development Board, the development board’s executive committee, the Abbot Hall Committee, the Committee on Faculty Compen-sation and the Trustee Executive Committee. His four children, Sarah, Charles, James and Sam, are all Andover alumni.
Goodyear received an LL.B. degree from Yale in 1967 and has spent most of his career in the practice of law; most notably, he served as general counsel to the Chrysler Corporation as Lee Iacocca battled successfully to pull the giant carmaker out of a financial crisis that began in 1979. Later in life, Goodyear immersed himself in writing, long a favorite avocation. A dedicated reader of both James Boswell and Samuel Johnson, in 1995 he wrote a play, An Evening with James Boswell, which was read by actor Sam Waterston at Weill Hall in New York. In addition, Goodyear has worked as a volunteer with Save the Children, traveling all over the world for the organization. At Andover volunteer award functions and other OAR gatherings, Goodyear has been the person most likely to step up to honor and entertain volunteers with jokes, witty songs and parodies he had composed. He and his wife, Carmen, divide their time between Geneva, Switzerland, and Lyme, Conn.

“Dick has always been passionate about the Andover cause and enthusiastically supportive of our volunteers and staff,” says Peter Ramsey, secretary of the academy. “I have especially appreciated his intellectual integrity and our regular exchange of ideas and strategies. Dick has our heartfelt thanks.”

Edward Elson ’52, a charter trustee since 1997 and vice chair of Campaign Andover, has replaced Goodyear as chair of the academy resources committee. A successful businessman, Elson is a former ambassador to Denmark and has served as the first chairman of National Public Radio, chairman of Commentary magazine and the 34th rector of the University of Virginia. He is an alumnus of UVA and the School of Law at Emory University.

In 1980, Elson established the Elson Artist-in-Residence program at PA, and in 1996 the Arts and Communications Center, built in 1963, was completely refurbished and renamed the Elson Art Center after its lead donor.
