Two members of Phillips Academy’s senior faculty will assume new roles in school governance next term. Head of School Barbara Landis Chase has named Stephen D. Carter, now dean of faculty, as chief financial officer, and Margarita O’Byrne Curtis, head of the world languages division, as dean of studies.
Steve Carter, who joined the Andover faculty as a math teacher in 1980, holds a Sc.B. degree in engineering from Brown University and an M.A.L.S. in mathematics from Wesleyan University. A former civil engineer, he served PA as dean of Pine Knoll Cluster, associate dean of studies and scheduling officer, and dean of students and residential life prior to becoming dean of faculty in 2000. In assuming the position of chief financial officer, Carter follows Neil Cullen, who retires this spring after 18 years with the academy. |
Margarita Curtis, a native of Cali, Colom-bia, joined PA’s Spanish faculty in 1986 after teaching several years at Harvard University. She holds a B.A. degree from Tulane University, an M.S. degree from Mankato State Univer-sity in Minnesota, and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard. A pub-lished author, she has been head of the Division of World Languages since 1997. As dean of studies, she succeeds Vincent Avery, who returns to the classroom as a teacher of philosophy and religious studies.
Both administrators will have pivotal roles in the school as members of the eight-member Dean’s Council. In announcing the appointments, Chase extolled Carter and Curtis for the valuable contributions they have made to the school, their knowledge of and loyalty to the academy, and the high esteem in which they are held by their faculty colleagues. |
