Adam Weinberg leaves Andover for New York's Whitney Museum

Adam Weinberg, director of the Addison Gallery of American Art since 1999, has been named director of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York. He assumed his new post in November. Susan C. Faxon, associate director and curator at the Addison, is serving as interim director during the search to replace Weinberg.

During his tenure, Weinberg brought to the Addison vibrant exhibitions highlighting a rich variety of artists that included Wendy Ewald ’69, Alex Katz, Kara Walker, Trisha Brown,
Sol LeWitt and Richard Stankiewicz. Weinberg, who also was the curator of one or two shows a year, built upon programs that extended the museum’s reach beyond the Phillips Academy community to area schools and to the general public. In spring 2002, Weinberg organized SiteLines: Art on Main, a collaborative project that involved nationally recognized artists as well as the town of Andover, students from the Andover and Lawrence public schools, and PA. He was instrumental in acquiring work by Sol Lewitt and a significant print collection from Tyler Graphics in New York.

“Adam Weinberg has been a tremendously capable and creative director of the Addison, and we are sorry to see him leave,” said Head of School Barbara Landis Chase. “Fortunately, Adam’s deft leadership, which built on the work of his predecessors, has put the Addison in a strong position in regard to its collections, exhibitions, programs and strategic planning.”
