Ted Probert ’54 knows something about diving in. While at Andover, and later at Yale, he lettered in swimming, specializing in middle- and long-distance freestyle events. Since then, Ted has gone on to coach youth swimming and enhanced his diving credentials by adding sky diving and scuba diving to his list of athletic experiences.
Ted has also taken the plunge as a volunteer with a number of worthy charitable organizations, including his church and a local battered women’s agency. Professionally, he serves as the head of a foundation devoted to research and treatment of heart disease and cancer, especially relating to women’s health issues.
“There are so many compelling needs out there, and my wife, Ann, and I are often willing to step up to try to meet them,” he says.
Ted attributes his commitment to the non sibi spirit instilled in him during his days at Andover. As part of his upcoming 50th Reunion, Ted chose to recognize his appreciation for Andover by making the school the beneficiary of a charitable lead annuity trust that pays income over 20 years.
“This trust not only helps me support sabbaticals for Andover’s dedicated teaching faculty, but it also helps me to pass on assets to our children at a significant tax savings,” he says. “The tax benefits of creating these trusts are bigger than ever before thanks to the current low-interest-rate environment. It is very gratifying to know I can help Andover while meeting personal financial objectives as well.”
