Committee
charged with planning April celebrations
In April
2003, Phillips Academy will put on its party hat to celebrate both
the conclusion of Campaign Andover and the dual anniversaries of Phillips
Academy, founded 225 years ago, and Abbot Academy, founded 175 years
ago.
Over the summer, a planning committee was named to prepare for the
big event. The committee is co-chaired by Director of Alumni Affairs
Michael Ebner 70; Jean St. Pierre, instructor in English and
theatre; and Tamara Rogers 70, past president of the Alumni
Council.
We will be focusing on the history and tradition of both Phillips
Academy and Abbot Academy to create a celebration that will bring
together our alumni, students and faculty, said Ebner.
The committee has plans to meet throughout the fall and winter and
will update the community as plans are put in place.
Summer
Session says goodbye to Jan Lisiak
In the
midst of celebrating its 60th anniversary, Summer Session said goodbye
to its director, Jan Lisiak, who retired in September after 15 years
at the academy.
Lisiak became director of Summer Session in 1996. Under her tenure,
Summer Session pared down the length of its program from six to five
weeks and developed a strong Web presence to attract more students.
Lisiak also encouraged the development of immersion programs like
Theatre Enterprise, which contributes to a deeper and more meaningful
foray into the world of drama.
Before heading up PAs Summer Session, Lisiak served the academy
as director of academic computing and acting director of technology
and telecommunications.

PA observes first anniversary of Sept. 11
|
In
recognition of the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept.
11, 2001, students, faculty and staff were invited to participate
in several commemorative events on campus.
The day began with an all-school meeting in Cochran Chapel. Following
welcoming remarks by Head of School Barbara Chase, Acting Head of
School Becky Sykes and Instructor in History and Social Science Carroll
Perry shared their reflections of Sept. 11, 2001. After a singing
of America (My Country Tis of Thee), the chapel
bells rang, followed by a two-minute national time of silence. Staff
members not present at the all-school meeting were encouraged to gather
in their respective departments for the tolling of the bells and moment
of silence.
Later that afternoon, the community was invited to a gathering with
music and prayers, followed by an Interfaith Service of Remembrance
that evening in Cochran Chapel. |

Nineteen
participants, including PA students, alumni children, alumni chaperones
and three faculty members joined in a community service, language
and learning program in the Dominican Republic and on the PA campus
in July. The three-week program, organized by the Spanish department
and the Office of Community Service, was led by Director of Alumni
Affairs and Protestant Chaplain Mike Ebner 70, Interim Director
of Community Service Mike Koehler 94, Spanish instructor Rebecca
McCann and Christine Cloonan 98. The trip, organized to immerse
students in the culture and language of the West Indies island country,
also afforded them an opportunity to build teamwork and solidarity
through community service.
The two weeks spent in the Dominican Republic included a tour of
the capital, Santo Domingo, and a welcome by the U.S. ambassador,
community service projects at Fudeco Dajabón and El Cibao,
and outdoor activities at a beach resort and at Rancho Baiguate
and the Ebano Verde Research Preserve.
Upon their return home, the group stayed on campus for an additional
week and created a presentation for the Phillips Academy Summer
Session community about their experiences.
