Manager named for ice skating facilities

Phillips Academy has named Benjamin W. Ruggles of Leominster, Mass., as manager of rink operations for the school’s ice skating facilities. Ruggles has an extensive background in recreation administration and management, previously serving as general manager of the Wallace Civic Center and Planetarium in Fitchburg, Mass.

"Ben’s diverse management experiences, especially his leadership, facility management and project management skills, will be invaluable as we plan for the opening of the new Ted Harrison Hockey Rink for community use next spring," says Martha Fenton, director of athletics. "In this new position, he will be a liaison to the community, meeting regularly with all user groups to further build upon those established relationships. He will also be responsible for developing local programming, such as summer camps, figure skating, adult hockey and other community programs hosted by the rink. He will insure proper permits and licenses are maintained from the town of Andover, as well as up-to-date first aid and safety equipment."

Former president of the Massachusetts Recreation and Park Association, Ruggles has also previously served as New England regional manager of Ruggles & Associates, Fair Lawn, N.J.; senior vice president and general manager of the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, Mass.; and director of recreation for the city of Leominster, Mass. He holds a B.S. degree in recreational service education from the University of Connecticut in Storrs.

PA welcomes new students
During orientation in early September, returning Phillips Academy students welcomed 337 new faces to campus, including 203 students in the Class of 2005. The new students—184 boys and 153 girls—come to Andover from 30 states and 19 countries and were selected from a pool of 2,168 applicants. According to Debby Murphy ’86, acting dean of admission while Dean Jane Fried is on sabbatical, the 21 percent admit rate and 74 percent yield make this the most competitive admission season in recent years. (MS)2 prepares to celebrate 25 years

Next summer, Math and Science for Minority Students, the summer program better known as (MS)2, will celebrate its 25th anniversary. All alumni are invited to attend a reunion on campus July 12-14, 2002, as well as a variety of other events, which will take place throughout the country. Plans by (MS)2 director Temba Maqubela and others are already in place for alumni to gather in Chicago, New York and Fort Worth.

Phillips Academy designed (MS)2 in 1977 as part of its ongoing effort to strengthen the educational opportunities and quality of life for urban, public school minority students.

Plan ahead for reunions

Andover and Abbot classes ending in 2 and 7 will celebrate their reunions on June 7, 8 and 9, 2002. Reunions are a wonderful opportunity to revisit your favorite places on campus, reacquaint yourself with old friends and meet new ones. Mark your calendars, and plan to return to Andover in June.

A new Andover connection is a click away

In September, Andover launched a new online community called Blue Link that allows alumni to access and update personal information, search for fellow alumni, post résumés and participate in chat rooms, all with the click of a mouse. Blue Link has been designed not only to increase the accuracy of updated information, but to broaden communication among alumni worldwide.

The centerpiece of Blue Link is a robust, searchable alumni database that provides all Phillips and Abbot Academy alumni the opportunity to update individual contact information in a password-protected, online environment. Alumni can search for fellow alumni based on a broad array of user-defined criteria such as class year, home address and undergraduate institution.

Users have the option of having a permanent PA-designated e-mail address. This address gives friends and classmates a dependable and easily recognized means of reaching each other, regardless of where each user’s personal e-mail address is located.

Another integral component of Blue Link is a Career Center. This allows alumni to post résumés, view or list job openings, share career advice or indicate interest in serving as a career mentor to current PA students. Message boards and chat rooms allow users to take part in one or more discussion sessions and provide them with the ability to track discussion topics through a single frame. Community participants can also quickly and easily create customized home pages, incorporating static or animated text, graphics and advanced features. Finally, a "yellow pages" component provides the chance for users to promote businesses, products or services to others in the alumni community. A search feature gathers listings for products or services specific to users’ needs.
