Every week, Phillips Academy students in the school's
Math Club gather to solve exciting and interesting math problems.
Solving these problems often involves more creativity than doing the
kinds of problems that are the focus of classroom work. Instead of
just leading students through a pre-determined set of steps, Math
Club problems invite them to come up with their own paths to solutions.
Math Club also sponsors the administration of math
contests at Phillips Academy. Contests not only present students
with interesting problems to tackle, but provide a setting for friendly
competition between classmates, pushing everyone to do his or her
best. These contests' home pages provide additional information:
American
Mathematics Competitions (AMC)
(sponsors of AHSME, AIME, and USAMO)
American
Regions Math League (ARML)
Harvard-MIT
Math Tournament
Math
League (sponsors of NEMLs)
In addition to these contests, many Math Club members
also take advantage of Andover's own prize exams with monetary prizes at the end of every year.
Contests are always administered in the evenings,
so they don't interfere with classes or athletics. They are announced
by signs around Morse Hall and notices left in the mailboxes of
students who have signed up for Math Club.
The Math Club is proud to have Don Barry, instructor
of mathematics, as its coach. Besides being a great teacher, Mr.
Barry is also a friend and supporter to all of the school's Mathletes.
We are very lucky to have him!
If you are a current student, we hope that you
will join us!
Remember: Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m., Morse 13!
