Parents & Students - Religious and Spiritual Life
Cochran Chapel, pictured at left, is the spiritual center of Phillips Academy. First dedicated in 1932, it was the final gift of Thomas Cochran, Class of 1890. Designed by architect Charles Adams Platt, the exterior is neo-Georgian. The interior, barrel-vaulted and colonnaded with carved oak paneling, suggests the late 17th-century English Baroque style of Christopher Wren. In 1981, the Andover Organ Company installed a new 2 manual, 27 stop, tracker organ.

In addition to housing the chaplaincy and student religious organizations, Cochran Chapel is home to the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, choral and orchestral groups, the Community Service program and all-school meetings. Renovated in 1998 with a generous gift from David M. Underwood '54, Cochran Chapel was re-dedicated Oct. 16, 1998.

The interfaith ministry of Andover seeks to be responsive to the spiritual needs of the school. While we represent the Protestant, Roman Catholic and Jewish traditions, we assist students, whatever their background, in meeting their religious needs.

Each week, the religious communities gather for both worship and fellowship, with times and places published in the school's weekly bulletin. Major occasions of the religious year, Yom Kippur, Easter, Ramadan, for example, may be celebrated on campus or through the hospitality of surrounding communities. In addition, we celebrate our common heritage and values in special services, especially at Thanksgiving, Veterans Day, Memorial Day and Baccalaureate. The chaplains also encourage the school community to recognize needs placed before all of us: concerns of hunger, peace and justice.

Various traditions are represented by student clubs, including Christianity Happening in Living Life (Protestant), Catholic Student Fellowship (formerly Newman Club), Jewish Student Union, United Muslim Association, Hindu Student Union, Quaker Meeting and the Andover Interfaith Round Table. These organizations offer a variety of programs for the enrichment of their members and the whole school. There are opportunities for other groups to form.

Sincerely,

Rev. Toni DiPina , Associate Protestant Chaplain

Rev. Michael Ebner, Protestant Chaplain

Hannah Goldstein, Ezra Fellow for Jewish Community

Theodore Kepes, Jr. PhD, Catholic Chaplain

Rabbi Neil Kominsky, Jewish Chaplain
