ALUMNUS KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN TO BE HONORED AT VETERANS' DAY SERVICE

 November 9, 2005

ANDOVER, Mass.—During a special Veterans’ Day observance on Friday, Nov. 11, Phillips Academy will honor Lt. Commander Erik S. Kristensen, a 1991 graduate of Andover whose name was recently added to the school’s Memorial Place monument. The event marks the first time a new name has been added to the monument since it was dedicated in 1994.

The Memorial Place monument honors alumni who lost their lives during military service subsequent to World War II. Prior to the addition of Kristensen’s name, the monument contained the names of eight alumni killed during the Korean Conflict as well as the names of eight alumni killed during the Vietnam War.

Kristensen was one of 16 servicemen killed on June 28, 2005 when his Special Operations MH-47D Chinook helicopter was shot down during a rescue mission in Afghanistan. Kristensen was 33 years old and a member of the U.S. Navy SEALs.

The short, interfaith service planned for Veterans’ Day will include a tribute to Kristensen and the placing of a wreath at the plaque honoring him. Kristensen’s mother and other members of his family are expected to attend the event.

The ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. at Memorial Place, an outdoor plaza area located in front of Borden Gym and behind the Shuman Admission Center.
