 January 11, 2008

ANDOVER, Mass.—Although it will be a few months yet before winter gives way to spring, high school and middle school students can get a jump on their summer plans by attending Phillips Academy’s 18th annual Summer Opportunities Fair on Sunday, January 27. The event, which will be held in the Case Memorial Cage, is open to the general public from noon until 2 p.m.

The fair gives students and their families a chance to meet with representatives from more than 80 local, national, and international summer programs as well as interim year programs. Among the wide range of programs that will be represented at the fair are those that focus on academic enrichment, outdoor adventure, international homestay, interim year, travel, internships, community service, camps, arts, sports and more.

One PA student who took advantage of a summer opportunity last year was Charles Shoener’ 10. He participated in a program organized by Glimpses of China that took him on a six-week trip to China. During the first four weeks he attended classes and took field trips that that were focused on enhancing his understanding of China’s history and culture as well as current challenges facing the country. During the last two weeks, he toured major Chinese cities, including, Shanghai, Beijing, Xi’an, and Chengdu.

The trip, says Shoener,  “was an eye opening experience for me and was very different from anything I had ever done before. This is the program to be in if you are interested in discovering what China is like. By studying its history and traditions and by having an open mind, I was able to understand some of the real issues that China is facing.”

The fair will be open to PA students from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and to the general public from noon to 2 p.m. The event is sponsored by the Phillips Academy Summer Opportunities Office and the Parents of Students of Phillips Academy (PSPA).
