FORMER PA TEACHER, SUSAN M. LLOYD, WINS MCKEEN AWARD

January 13, 2006

ANDOVER, Mass.—A former member of the Phillips Academy faculty, Susan M. Lloyd, will be presented with the McKeen Award on Friday, January 13 in recognition of her contribution toward making the Phillips Academy community a successful and equitable coeducational environment. A presentation ceremony will be held in McKeen Hall on the Academy campus at 7 p.m.

Lloyd, who retired from Phillips Academy in 1997, joined the Abbot Academy faculty in 1968, five years prior to the merger of the two schools. At that time, Abbot Academy was an all-girls school while Phillips Academy catered to boys. When the schools merged, Lloyd was one of the Abbot teachers to accept the invitation to join the PA faculty, and during the subsequent years, she was an influential voice on campus and a strong role model for female students.

A history and social sciences instructor, Lloyd had a strong sense of social activism. Among other accomplishments, she established PA’s first service-learning course, the Urban Studies Institute, which provided an opportunity for PA and Lawrence High School students to work together in the classroom and do field research and community service. She was involved in the creation of the school’s Gay/Straight Alliance in 1988, and she taught courses on Women’s History and on History of Racism/Ethnic Studies.

Passionate about music, Lloyd served as an instructor in the music department, where she directed chamber music and Fidelio, a student a cappella group. She was one of the first female Cluster Deans, a member of a faculty women’s support group, and served on the ten-year Coeducation Committee. In 1978, she was commissioned by PA to write the history of Abbot Academy, A Singular School: Abbot Academy 1828-1973.
