ANDOVER,
Mass.—Cellist Lynn Harrell will be on campus Feb. 19-20
as the 2004-05 Kayden Guest Artist, meeting and working with Phillips
Academy students and faculty. He will conduct a master class at
2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, in the Timken Room, Graves Hall, and
give a concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 20, in Cochran Chapel. These
free events, which are open to the public, are made possible by
the generosity of the Bernard and Mildred Kayden Fund, established
by the Kayden family to bring distinguished artists to Phillips
Academy and the community.
The
master-class will feature Meta '05, Kevin '06, John '08 and Marina
'07. The Sunday concert program will include the music of J.S.
Bach, Hindemith, Beethoven and Saint-Saëns. Faculty member
Peter Warsaw will join Harrell in the performance of the Beethoven
A Major Sonata. The Academy Chamber Orchestra will accompany
him in the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto. Although both
events are free, a ticket is required for the Sunday concert.

Harrell has performed with orchestras throughout the world, including
a three-week "Lynn Harrell Cello Festival" with the
Hong Kong Philharmonic. He regularly collaborates with such noted
conductors as James Levine, Kurt Masur, Zubin Mehta, André
Previn, Sir Simon Rattle, Leonard Slatkin, Yuri Temirkanov, Michael
Tilson Thomas and Sir Neville Marriner. In 2004, Harrell, violinist
Anne-Sophie Mutter and pianist André Previn appeared with
the New York Philharmonic performing the Beethoven Triple Concerto
with Masur conducting. He has spent his summers performing and
teaching at the Aspen Music Festival for nearly 50 years. With
Itzhak Perlman and Vladimir Ashkenazy, Harrell was awarded two
Grammy Awards. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including
the first Avery Fisher Award. Harrell plays a 1720 Montagnana
cello. |
